Background:
The first computer I ever owned, this old 486 is faster than its rated speed. The 1-meg video card was much larger than most at the time, back in an age when 256K and 512K video cards were common. Thus, I was privileged in being able to achieve 1024x768 in 256 colours. Now, this computer is preparing to serve as an answering machine for our house phone line. It is insufficiently powered to run web browsers effectively, and does not have enough hard drive space to serve as a filesystem, and since it contains a voice modem with software completely configured to be an answering machine, this seems the logical choice.
